My shop is heated with a Modine Hot Dawg. It's hung from the ceiling, with
the bottom of the unit a bit over 9' from the floor. It's proven itself
capable of heating my 1264 sq ft shop built with insulated (R11?) 2x4 walls
and R19 ceiling insulation. The Hot Dawg is not especially quiet, but since
it only runs intermittently I don't find it too objectionable. The Hot Dawg
is not explosion proof (at least as installed in my shop). It is not a
direct-vent heater, but instead draws its combustion air from inside the
shop. I haven't found this to be a big problem even doing painting in the
winter. I simply get the shop good and warm, and then turn the thermostat
off just before spraying. After shooting, I give my fans a few minutes to
reduce the solvent levels, and then turn the thermostat back up. Depending
on the size of object I'm painting, and the type of paint, I can generally
let the heater run for a few minutes between coats and the parts and paint
all stay at reasonable temps. Note that I live in a relatively moderate
climate so the outside air drawn in by my fans is generally over 40F or 45F.
If I had known when I bought the heater that I was going to do as much
painting as I have, I would have looked for a direct-vent heater but my
current setup is working OK.
