By far my favorite design is the kind that goes on the side of the
forced-air furnace ducting, and has a small motor that spins a pair of
tubular arms, that suck water from a pan and throw it against a screen. It
will add very slightly to the dust in the house, but doesn't have any plates
or mesh that have to be cleaned/replaced every heating season. Ours was
controlled by a humidistat in the return air line, so it would only run when
the air was dry (and the furnace blower was running). However, I searched
high & low for one not too long ago, and came up empty-handed. The only
downside I can see to this design (besides the dust from water hardness) is
that if the float valve jams, it will overflow and dribble down the outside
of the furnace. But, since the water does not evaporate from around the
valve, there's no reason for it to jam.
