The advantage of repairing the seats you have is the "proper look" you will
have when you are done. There are British leather cleaners, I think they
call them "leather food" or such, that will clean into the grooves. But you
will still have the luxurious patina of all those years.
If you are going to have them reupholstered, I would start with an high-end
import dealer (BMW, Jaguar, etc.) and see who they use. Ideally, the shop
works on plenty of old cars and understands them.

Also, what do you look for in a person that is doing the upholstery job?
Are there any certifications I can ask for? Is there any questions that
separate the "good" from the "bad"? (I know just about nothing when it
comes to upholstery.)
