So, John, are you giving up on the smoking Kohler? Too bad. Do you live
close - I would take it off your hands, rebuild the engine and use it
for another 20 years. :-)
Be prepared for sticker shock - machines not half as well built as your
old clunker will start at $2000 and up. The chain store stuff looks
pretty, but will probably die at the end of the first season. Don't even
think about any of the old standby's - Sears, John Deere, Snapper, Troy
Built, Cub Cadet, etc. - they are now all built by Murray or Roof and
are junk (or worse). The commercial grade machines - Honda, Husqvarna,
Scag, Bunton, Grasshopper, Toro, etc. are very nice, but you better
contact your banker and check your line of credit before getting into
serious negotiations.
If I were going to buy a 10-20 hp lawn tractor today, I would look for a
nice old (1970's) Cub Cadet, Economy (Power King), John Deere, Ford,
Case, etc. Then I would pull the engine and overhaul it for about $100,
replace the spindle bearings and blades for another $50, belts, maybe
tires and seat and use it to cut the grass for another 20 years.
If anybody has an old machine like the above that they want to get rid
of in the northern NJ or eastern PA area, send me a note off line, and I
will come and pick it up and take it off your hands. :-)
