Got some great response - thanks!
Consensus is IR makes good stuff, C-H generally less so, although some have
had good luck. Nobody ever heard of Puma.
Interesting to note that CH and Puma rate their power as 6 or 6.5 hp, with
"peak" in fine print. IR says its 2 HP. Period.
A new contender just popped up:
Porter -Cable has a 25 gal, 115v vertical portable that stores 175 psi
(!)and kicks in at 145 psi. The output is the same, (typical 5.7-5.8 at 90),
but of course, with more air stored, it runs a bit longer without repumping
than a machine stiring 125 and trying to put out X cfm at 90 psi.
(I am pretty sure this is basically the same as the Sears Professional unit,
#16777.)
Also claims to be SUPER quiet (how quiet is THAT?). Says the motor runs at
about 1750 rpm instead of the usual 3450. Note: The IR unit also claims to
be "WhisperQuiet."
Price is same as CH and Puma ($125 less than IR).
BUT-But-But - it's oilless! (two stage).
The oilless part worries me. Should it?
