The force exerted by a hydraulic piston is the area of the piston times
the pressure behind it.
(Square inches) X (Pounds per Square Inch) = pounds exerted
or
(pounds exerted) / (Square inches) = PSI
The area of the piston is Pi (roughly 3.14 or 22/7) times half the
diameter times half the diameter (aka "Pi R squared"). So, a 2" piston
has an area of 3.14 square inches, while a 3" piston has an area of 3.14
X (3/2) X (3/2) = 7.07 sq in.
24000 pounds divided by 3.14 sq in = 7640 psi
24000 pounds divided by 7.07 sq in = 3390 psi
