Hi, Scott:

I'm a car nut, electronics buff, music buff, and an ER doc...

You could certainly achieve the electronic arrangement you seek, but...

I'm worried about a certain statistic....People driving while talking on
cell phones have the same accident and death rate as DRUNK DRIVERS. This is
NOT becouse of their hands or ears being occupied...it's the same with or
without the hands-free set-ups. It's because driver's minds are diverted
from driving towards the conversation. I hate to turn away business (after
all, your misery IS my bread and butter), but I'd consider strongly the
standard advice to pull over to shoulder or other safe spot whenever talking
on the cell phone.

Paul

no, it isn't *shop* related, but I'm trying here first because there's
lots of knowledge here and if my s/o kills me while talking on the cell
phone I can't work in the shop.

what I want to do is hard wire her cell phone into the car's wiring system
so that the phone uses the car's speakers for output and a microphone for
input. the mic in I can probably handle, but is there a way to get the
phone to automatically override the radio? as well, any tips on wiring
the phone into the car's wiring. the goal here is complete handsfree and
the antenna as far away from her head as possible. why? 1) her driving
is bad enough without the cell in one hand, 2) she is deaf in one ear, so
the phone makes her 'deaf' to road noise while in use, 3) assuming her
driving doesn't get her killed, I don't want radiation from the antenna to
get her (I know, I know, but this is still the most important person in my
life here and if it *isn't* just a scare, then I want her around), and 4)
she often drives our son in the car and I like him just as much, and I
don't like the idea of them stranded because the phone cord wigged out
again and the phone doesn't work or she got them both killed in an
accident.

an e.e. I'm not, so simple explanations and short words are appreciated.
I can find my way around a pair of wire cutters and a multimeter, though.

thanks

scott
