I have one of the small (less than a foot long) flourescent lights. Its
a cheap one that I bought at a car flea market. Has a 6 foot cord and an
outlet built into the handle. It also has a lens at the tip of the bulb
for focussed light. Its the only one I have and I don't miss the cage type
lamp.
My father recently picked up a light from Sears for $15 that uses one of
those small halogen reflector/bulb fixtures. Comes with a magnet mount and
the swivelable head. Haven't actually tried it under a vehicle yet.
