The advantage to having a cattle type electric fence is two-fold:  1)you
can use 12v batteries(meaning low voltage versus my other message about
killing burglars) or even solar chargers(I use a 12v solar fence charger
here in AZ for my horses. It is nearly a no maintenance system.) and 2)
it is very portable allowing for a wide variety of adaptations such as
the switches that Paul suggested.
