The best advice I received on a home and shop alarm was to put the siren or other LOUD noisemaker both inside and outside the shop. If the noise inside the shop is earsplittingly loud, they won't hang around too long since they can't hear any accomplice or any other noise (such as a cop responding) over the inside siren.
