If you are located anywhere near oil field activity go and talk to a
service rig or drilling rig company or even wireline companies. They use
the stuff by the spool and getting a scrap length could be as easy as being
at the right place at the right time. Just watch some of the cable they
use is big, drill line is usually to heavy unless you want to make a tow
sling for heavy equipment, if you talk to a service rig company ask about
sand or swab line as it is lighter and more practical. On a rig they have
limits to how long they use the cable then they must change it out, usually
they have problems getting rid of it because they change it out in the
field. For wireline watch out the electric line stuff is not that strong
since it has electrical conductor in the center, they also sometimes have
swab line that is just braided line and comes in smaller sizes like 5/16",
7/16" etc.

If not near oilfield then contact crane companies and ask them about old
cable.

How long a chunk do you require?
