Hi Ken.
I'm screwing 2x2s to the edge of the 2x4s. I can only find them in
8' lengths. Each section is secured with 6 evenly-spaced 2 1/2"
screws. I'm also using a few 10d nails when necessary to take the
bow out of the 2x2s and also to hold on the pieces where I build out
the fire breaks.
I did consider the sheetrock weight, which is why I'm using screws.
Most of the loading will be sheer (but not as much as if the studs
were sistered), and I think that I've got the leak in the ceiliing
fixed.... I think that the 2x2s are at least as strong as
the sheetrock in terms of pulling through or breaking. There's
a full 1" of screw in the existing stud, so I'm thinking that
it will hold.
