There are two types of HVLP guns.
1)Turbine powered use a High Volume Low Pressure turbine unit to supply air to
your gun. An air compressor is not needed unless you want to use a pressure
pot.
In that case the compressed air is used only to push the paint from the pot to
the gun. Large volumes of compressed air are not required.
2)Conversion guns "convert" compressed air (Low Volume High Pressure?) to
simulate HVLP. Most conversion guns I've seen need the output of large air
compressors to operate.

Would HVLP guns use less air? I am planning to use HVLP guns so
that I can paint in my garage without having to evacuate the whole
place including two other cars.
I may be off base here, but I am under the impression that with
HVLP it would suffice to just cover everything else and the overspray
on my walls and MG posters would be tolerable.
