I would say "essential".
During the much publicized ice storm that hit this area of Canada
earlier this year, one of the things I found myself doing was learning
on the spot how generators work and what is wrong with them when
they aren't.
Luckily, a little bit of oil was all it took to get some
people warm again. However, if that gadget wouldn't have been
there it would have been an expensive ice storm for
a lot of people.
