First, I am assuming that you have it wired for the correct voltage.
I would check the plate on the motor for power consumption etc.
so that you understand the power requirements of that motor.
Keep in mind that when the pressure starts to increase the load
on the motor can increase dramatically and you may simply be
starving it.
If it is anything other than the smallest of motors and it draws 12 Amps
with no load I would guess that everything is OK and you simply need more
power. Many compressor motors need 30 or 40 Amps. I know mine needs
a 40 Amp breaker at 220 Volts (5 Horsepower motor)
