List,
I want to thank all of you for your diverse opinions on this subject.
Most of you bandied about the same ideas I had, and after reading all of
this as well as Carroll Smith's description of what happens to threads as
final torque is applied, it is clear that I do not want any sliding on
casting threads during final torque-down of a fastener. Given that,
those threads must be locked first. I am confident that Loc-Tite will
offer adequate corrosion protection: the stud and casting are flooded
with plastic. In 20 years, when I pull the studs out of this motor, I'll
post to the list. ;-)
If I could find stainless steel studs for this application, I would use
them. APT say that they tried to use them but the pulley got in the way.
I don't consider installing the water pump without pulley to be a big
deal, but to each his own. Hopefully I will be able to find zinc-plated
studs instead.
Good to see lively discussion on this list!
