The bolts and nuts have probably been Parkerized. It is a metal pickle that
darkens it and to some degree, inhibits rust. (at least until the dealer can
get it off of his showroom floor).This is a metal treatment that has been
around for years. Somewhere I have a pamphlet about how to do it that I
bought at a gun show, but I can't find it right now or I'd give you the
particulars.

The process is quite simple, just heat the metal to a specified temp for a
specified period of time. Bury the hot part in the mixture of the proper
salts and let it cool.

I'd suggest that you look in Hemmings, an Eastwood catalog or Lindsay
Publications for information.

In the event I find the pamphlet, I'll put the specifics out to the
shop-talk group
