According to TIP (a company which sells sand blast and air compressor
equipment) the
plumbing should have the following:

1. A flexible connector (ie: hose) between the compressor/tank and the line.
2. Use black pipe (maybe they said that galvanized is ok also)
3. Slope the pipe run away from the compressor with a 90 degree down length at
the end
to collect water, put a water release valve at this end.
4. Tee up for any tap off lines.

The above makes intuitive sense if the line slopes back to the tank it would
probably
work out just fine, but it would increase the chance that water running back to
the
tank would get picked up by the air flow and carried along.

I don't see that a reel line is much different from a direct line. In any case
I would
tap off further down the metal pipe and not directly from the compressor in
order to
take advantage of the cooling effect of the pipe.

Good luck.
