I use a Craftsman 5 hp that only puts out 9.1 at 40 psi and 7.1 at 90psi.
When I went to by a spray gun I found that most of them required about 11
or 12 cfm. I talked to a number of "experts" at various stores and finally
gave up thinking I couldn't find a decent one. I borrowed a neighbors HVLP
gun that he bought from Harbor freight for $79 dollars. It required 12 cfm
at 70 psi. I decided to try it any way. Guess what NO PROBLEM. In addition
the HVLP guns use little paint that with the from the paint you can almost
pay for the gun. I bought a gallon and still have 1/2 of it left. One
quart would have been enough almost. The other benifit is that there is so
little overspray you hardly have to mask anything. Harbor freight has
several on sale now. One that looks good is usually $79 on sale for $69,
another which seems to be the same is on sale for $59 usually $69. CFM
requirement 2.8 to 8 at 15-50 psi. Both guns have a stainless steel needle
so you can use them with water based materials. The one I borrowed is on
sale for $74 usually $79.99. Have not used the previous two but can vouch
for this one.
