As and engineer I always like to keep things simple. I explained my
compressor setup to my son using the water facet and sink analogy.
The pump is the facet and is always running wide open or off. The
sink it the tank. The drain is the air tool. The larger the CFM
requirement of the tool, the larger the drain and that faster the
sink(tank) empties. By the way the level in the sink is the pressure
in my analogy. A larger sink (tank) will take longer to fill that a
smaller sink, assuming the size of the pump is constant. The recycle
time is based on the amount of work done with the tool, not the size
of the sink. If you have a big sink, the water level (pressure) will
drop less than a smaller sink would. But, if you let a gallon of water
out of either sink, you still need to add the gallon back. Your pump
is constant, so the time will be the same. Notice that the difference
is in the level of the water(pressure) in these two cases. So with
the bigger sink(tank) you can supply the a given pressure longer. The
bottom line is for a larger tank the pressure will drop more slowly as
you use your tools. This will allow you to do more work before having
to wait for the pressure to build up again (recycle). This also means
the recycle time will be longer! For you math lovers (Boyle's Law I
seem to remember): PV/T (big tank) = PV/T (small tank) P = Pressue
(PSI) V= Volume (Gallons) T= Temperature.

I just recently got a Devilbis 5HP compressor and I'm in the
process of
setting it up in my garage.
When reading the shop-talk archives I saw a suggestion to add
more
volume in an air compressor system by connecting another tank
(such as a
butane tank). I already have an 11 gallon air tank for use at
the track,
and was considering hooking it up to provide extra storage for
my
compressor, but I have a few questions:
1) Is this a good thing to do?
2) Would this setup have any effect on the CFM capabilities of
my setup,
or does it just reduce cycle time?
3) Would quick disconnect couplings be OK to use for hooking it
up (I
still want to easily be able to disconnect the tank for trips to
the
track)?
4) Should I install it before or after the water trap / filter /
regulator/ tool oiler?
