        I'm consodering bying a metal lathe for my garage.

By all means, check out rec.crafts.metalworking and the MetalWeb News
(http://tbr.state.tn.us/~wgray/index.html) where you will find lots
of opinions. You'll also find pointers to lots of used gear. 

The general opinion is that old but not worn US made machines are
much better than any of the new imports.
