After years of pretty much lurking around this site, suddenly there is a whole
world to talk about. Nate, Lee and Tom all talk about Highway 50, and I
wanted to add to their comments. There are two towns between Ely and Fallon,
Austin and Eureka, and both are all but ghost towns, certainly ghosts of their
former selves. Not too many years ago there were still old cars and trucks
aplenty in those two towns, and sumguy had not made much of a dent in the
value of them, people recognized they were tired and worn out - there was just
no place to put them except up in the hills, and that is what happened. A lot
were even left in town, and others hauled to a "dump" of sorts. If a local
took a shine to you, he told you where the dump was, and all you had to do was
kick the rattlesnakes out of the way to get all sorts of goodies.
But the radio was pretty useless, few if any stations out there. My 8 track
was a blessing on my last trip in my Cordoba with detector in the 55 MPH days
- It was always a favorite trip, but the air and tape sure made it nicer.
Nate, you may be from California, but you sure do not sound like "sumguy".
