Timing mark will be visible at the rear of the motor, low
passenger side. There is a something like a 3/4" hole with a
pointer cast into it. When you rotate the crankshaft you'll
eventually see a small steel ball (cast into the flywheel)
appear in the hole. Watch your cylinder #1 valves both come up
and then line the ball up with the pointer. The ball will line
up at TDC for both compression and exhaust strokes, so make sure
your valves are closed to located the TDC position.
Once you know what to look for, you can statically set the
points to just open at TDC. Then start her up and you can use a
timing gun to rotate the distributor as necessary for finer
adjustment. It's a tight fit down to see the timing hole. I
usually leave a small flashlight turned resting on the starter
to put some light on the area.
