Michigan abandoned emissions testing in the 80s. I've read that a federal
mandate is bringing it back in 06 or 08. I wait to see what our
distinguished (extreme sarcasm) state government comes up with. Michigan
does use reformulated gas the additive, methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE),
has been shown to be a major source of ground/well water pollution
throughout the mid-west. It's consequences are in the Detroit Free Press on
a weekly basis. Solve one problem by creating three more.
I feel confident that pre-emission vehicles will always be exempt. However
if they plan to base emission testing on the year of motor, the first thing
I plan to do is put an old school hemi in my 97 dodge PU. A rolling 25-year
cut-off for emissions testing would secure the future of our hobby
(obsession) and hotroding in general. HotRod magazine carries a government
watch column that tracks detrimental hotroding legislation and usually
includes whom to contact for voicing your opinion. A letter to your
legislator is considered the voice of 100 voters. To all concerned with this
issue, if youre truly concerned, write a letter.
