Way back when, when I was a lot younger, I built a 327...used a 4bolt main
350 block and a 307 steel crank. I was running it in a '69 chev 3/4 ton 4x4
w/ 4spd trans and 4.55 gears. There were only 2 problems, in prime
condition it got about 12 mpg (holly 650 double pumper), and after 105,000
miles on it, it sucked a valve :( pretty much the end of it! But even with
the 4.55 gears I would cruse I-5 at 70+, and at one point I saw the speedo
at 110 mph, (yikes!)(would that be fast enough for a '56 3100). Yep shoulda
had stronger valve springs and better valves! Oh and by the way yes it was
balanced! Best ruinnin' SB I've ever had!
35" tires w/ 4.55 gears 2840 RPM = 65 MPH
35" tires w/ 4.55 gears 4800 RPM = 110 MPH
35" Tires w/ 3.90 gears 2435 RPM = 65 MPH (Nice RPM range for a SB327!)
35" tires w/ 3.90 gears 4800 RPM = 128 MPH Just how fast do ya' wanta'
go?
35" tires w/ 3.90 gears 8000 RPM = suicidal :) (213 MPH, not me!)
