Pull the #1 sparkplug and turn the engine over until the #1 piston is
all the way to the top. (You can use a pencil or other probe to check)
Also you can pull the valve cover and make sure that both the intake and
exhaust valves for the #1 cyl. are in the closed position.

I am sure that you will hear other methods from the list.
