Culver,
Thank you very much for this excellent description! I looked through my
assembly manual, but missed that page somehow. Just to be sure I understand,
the flat stock mounts on the top side of the bed side angle? So, it is
visible, while the other angle iron brace is hidden behind the bedside and
under the bed wood?
Regards, Jim W.

Hello Jim,
These things have been a mystery to me as well. I am generally a big
fan of
Chevy engineering, but it looks to me like Chevy farmed this wheel carrier's
design out to the lowest bidder--and got their money's worth. (IMHO, of
course.)
From "1947-1954 Truck Factory Assembly Manual" (Section 10, Sheets 3.00
&
3.01), which probably show 1954 assembly, it looks like this:
1) Your 2 rail assemblies, which seem to heavy sheet steel, bent
or
welded somewhat like a steel angle, mount vertically to the outside of the PU
box side. 6 rods mount to these and carry the wheel.
2) These 2 rail assemblies are secured to the PU box with 2 bolts
each. The bolts look like 3/8" diameter.
3) The horizontal dimension between bolts securing the 2 rail
assemblies is 10.44". (I am an inch and sixteenths guy. Someone at Chevy is an
inch and hundredths guy. Hey/she made the drawing. They won this round.)
4) The bottom bolt of each rail assembly anchors, not only to
the PU
box side, but to a horizontally installed channel, mounted to the inboard side
of the PU box, below the wood bed. I think that may be your mystery piece
number one. It has 2 holes in the vertical leg for bolts through the PU box
side & through the 2 rail assemblies. They are 10.44" apart. It also has 2
holes in the horizontal leg for bolts through the PU bed and its angle bed
trim. They are 11.94" apart.
5) Somewhere, I can't tell where--but I'd guess it's above the
wood
bed & above the angle bed trim--is a backing plate. That may be your mystery
piece number two. It has 2 holes that receive the vertical bolts through the
channel & PU bed. They are 11.94" apart.
My sketchy description demonstrates why, "A picture is worth a thousand
words."
If push comes to shove, I can scan these drawings and email them later.
Regards & good luck (meaning, when I get around to putting a gas tank
where
my spare tire is mounted between the frame rails under the box, I hope to find
a better way to mount my spare tire on the outside of the box than Chevy came
up with.)

Lee,
Thanks for the info, but I've got the two angles mounted and
the spare rack
itself mounts to that, but I also have these other two pieces that I can't
figure out where they go - one piece of flat stock and one piece a sort of
modified 'C' shape. Both look like reinforcement, but where do they go?

Jim
If yours is like my '54 the two angles, which look like
opposite parts, are
installed vertical and each one bolts to the bed in 3 places. Lee

I'm having
some problems! I have two extra pieces of metal that I can't figure out where
they go. Both pieces look like they are designed to reinforce the bed sides
for the additional weight of the spare. Both pieces have square holes (i.e.
like what would be used for a carriage type bolt) and the holes are spaced
exactly the same - so I believe they go from side to side (or parallel to the
ground). Both pieces are about 15" long and about 1 1/2 " wide. One is just
flat stock of maybe 1/8" steel the other is a modified 'C' shape if you look
at it on-end. Does anyone know where these go? Could someone look at their
tire rack and enlighten me! Thanks in advance! Jim W.
