I looked at the hole for the emergency cable and from what i can tell
without taking mine all the way out, they look the same in both rears, about
a 3/4" hole.
I also measured the wheel studs and they 5 on 4-1/2 on the malibu rear. Is
that the standard for chevy? I will be getting a disc brake conversion kit
from ECI, but I failed to ask them the wheel stud measurements. I thought
chevy was more like 5 on 4-3/4, but i don't know.
If you made an educated guess, do ya think this rear would fit in a 55 2nd
without to much trouble?
Thanks to all,

ps, extra bous question. Do you think a 97 S-10 extended cab with a V6
Vortex engine pull a 20' pontoon boat without any trouble?

The rear end out of my 56 measures 62 inches if measuring from outside of
each brake drum which is basically the axle face measurement.
The 71 nova rear going in measure 60 1/2 inches at the same places. Only
3/4 inch difference per side. Not a problem at all. Although can't go wild
with wide wheel/tire combos. Sounds like your rear end is original.
With the replacement you might have to get offset wheels to the outside to
clear the fenders from the inside of the tire if it gets close.
