My dad owned a 250 6 in a 67 3/4 ton Sub with granny low 4 speed
when I was in high school. It would pull or haul anything a 3/4
ton pickup would. With the 6, you just won't do much freeway cruising
at the speed limit.
With a half ton, I would look a little closer at things like the
rear end ratio. As far as 3 speed vs 4 speed we hardly ever used
granny low anyways, mainly for creeping along trails looking for
partridge.
BTW, the 67 3/4 ton had coil rear springs. So did a friend's 70
3/4 ton. By 73, they went back to leaf springs.
