IH has used a lot of other diesels, and/or owners have had the trucks
repowered with other make engines-especially Cummins, and Caterpiller
(larger mainly). Back in the 50's & 60's Buda was a big name for repowering
with diesels. And at one time Cummins put out kits to adapt their different
diesel engines to FXXD, Chevy, etc. Even 1/2 and 3/4 ton delivery vans.
Motor mounts, radiators, etc. I don't think they do it anymore, maybe
because of emission problems and liabilities. But converting to a diesel
from gas is definitely a huge job. You would almost HAVE to have a diesel
expert available for technical help. But on the other hand, NOTHING pulls
like a diesel. Several years ago I was going up the hills from Roosevelt
Lake to Payson, here in AZ. I was driving a fairly new Chrysler minivan with
a V-6 engine. The fastest I could go was 35. An older model (1991-92)
Dodge/Cummins 3/4 ton pick up, towing a 35 foot Avion fifth wheel travel
trailer, went by me doing AT LEAST 10 miles an hour faster. Don't buy a
diesel for great fuel economy, buy one for brute towing power!! But they're
not cheap, either as a repower, or a new vehicle. Bob K in PHX, AZ.
