Larry, I enjoyed your discussion on replacing your water pump. I think you
must have more smarts than the average bear. Just before I retired from the
navy, the RA5-C "Vigilante" community started using what the navy called
aircraft "phased maintenance". Basically, what that meant was once you had
an area opened up, you replaced EVERYTHING which was due, or even close, to
failure. Of course, some of these items were WAY inside the airplane, and
took 50-60 hours just to get to. Let's face it, is it REALLY worth it to get
even six months more use for a $35 part, when we're talking 4-5 hours more
work to take it apart again? Abt rebuilt parts-As I've mentioned before, I
have a 78 IH Scout II (well, I own it, my 5 foot tall daughter has
possession of it-it's the closest thing to a tank she can legally drive on
the road! ), and recently put in a rebuilt master cylinder. TWICE!! When I
talked to the gent I get most of my parts from, he told me since NAFTA, he
only recommends new parts. Most of the time, the price difference is very
little between new and rebuilt, and the rebuilt quality is very iffy. Who
cares if you get a lifetime warranty on a part if it takes two or more tries
to get something that works. Starters, alternators, etc. I'm getting too old
to do this stuff more than once! Larry, I especially appreciate the way you
list your suppliers, and also tell us abt the dumb things you've done (oh
ho, so I'm not the only one who's done step 2 before step one!!). Now I have
to have my "computer gnome" show me how to save this as a document. He's the
software whiz, while I know more (but not much!!) abt the hardware. On a
non-related tack-On a recent trip back to my old haunts in Oregon, I had the
opportunity to meet Sheldon Schmidt in Dallas. Dallas is a small town north
of Corvallis; my mom and dad were married there in 1933. Sheldon has a
really neat (old guy talk) small machine shop with some really nice,
up-to-date equipment. He could probably BUILD you a 235 engine in his
shop,(from the block up!!) but I don't think any of us could afford it!! I'm
retired from a "Quasi Arizona State Entity", the Central Arizona Project. We
had bigger machines in our machine shop, but nothing as modern. I really
enjoyed the short time Sheldon and I had to talk. He had to get back to
something called WORK! Great trip, but I'm getting tired of dodging 18
wheelers doing 70-75 mph. Bob K in PHX, AZ.
