When you remove the speedometer cable there is no gear. It has a square end
on BOTH ends of the cable. That fits in the gear (a square hole) and turns
the gear. You have to take out a bolt to remove the gear on the transmission
end. You could remove the cable from the transmission and put the square end
in an electric drill and turn it and see if your speedometer works. The
housing holds the cable pressed into the square holes on the speedometer and
the transmission so make sure the cable is in the square hole on the
speedometer. Not sure about a 53 but they usually work this way. You can get
a new speedometer cable without buying the housing (sometimes)
Hope this helps a little.
Good Luck
