If it's cracked, most likely Laquer, or on too thick. Yes, I think the crack
goes all the way thru and will need down to metal or better yet, all
stripped off. Otherwise new paint will crack same place, plus you won't be
able to sand out the crack till to metal. sometimes a pce of paint can peel
or chip right away from metal when this is happening. My 54 is doing that on
hood now. Sometimes with filling with bondo, you'll get the same reaction
late in life. You can sand it off, chemical strip with removers (auto type),
or sandblast or chemical dip if you have that in area. Dip will be
expensive, blasting may be, strippers take long and smell, messy, sanding
takes longest and I don't think you'll get the results you want. Power
sanders will be needed for that big job. Is it FUN yet? Good Luck.
