Michael,
 Sounds to me that you have a side mount carrier. I assume that you have the 
notched out fenders on your truck! What you described is the same as what I 
have on my truck. Mine is a '58, I don't know if it makes a difference in the 
year of your truck as far as having room to bolt it to the side of the bed.
