Hi all....I attended the 51st Autorama , Cobo Hall in Detroit this past
weekend. Spoke to two interesting people there.
First, Jon Moss from Chevrolet. He is the guy who gets to create dang near
anything he wants to inside Chevrolet, and gets paid for it yet! I asked him
about the SSR. He said he was quite involved in that vehicle. I spoke my mind,
said there should be a base version, with the new I-6, fixed roof, newer
version of the ralley wheel, lighter and cheaper than the v-8 retractable one
we all have been shown. He looked up after signing a photo and said "There
will be different versions". Now there is something that hasn't been in the
newspapers or magazines!
Second, spoke with Mike Eaton, owner of Eaton Spring in Detroit. Big spring
manufacturer. He had his F**d delivery there, plus an absolutely beautiful
snow white early 50's AD, stone stock. I asked his opinion on lowering, ie.
removal of leaves, mono leafs, c-notching, etc. He said he would never
recommend removal of leaves because each leaf depends upon the next size leaf
for SUPPORT. He stressed that word too. You remove a leaf, you remove the
necessary support. Mono leafs? He doesn't manufacture them. He said one broken
leaf in a multi leaf system will get you home. A broken mono leaf could kill
you. Again, his words. C-notch? He has seen too many frames cut and not
correctly reinforced. He said too, a vehicle that differs from stock is driven
more aggressively and needs the strength and support therefore in the
suspension. And he said too, don't say you'll never put anything in the bed,
either. And he is a spring builder, so I guess I didn't expect him to say
anything else. But his words do give one pause.
Great day, great show!!! Got George Barris to autograph a photo of his
Kopper Kart ('56 Chevy truck), got free catalogs, and bought a Von Dutch
flying eyeball t-shirt.
Wanted to pass this on to you people for further thoughts.....
