I used a 16-gallon fuel cell with my '48 1/2 ton. Mine is the standard, black
poly type with steel straps. I fabricated cross members and notched the
truck's rear main crossmember, but you can probably fit yours in without the
notching. Also, take measurements and see if you can fit a larger cell. If I
had to do it over again, I'd use one of the steel-clad cells with a built-in
fuel level sender. On mine, I used a hole saw to install the sender for my
VDO gauge. I have a steel-plate bed floor, so I used a cut-off wheel to cut a
square hole for a fuel door. I then used hardware-store hinges and a keyed
lock to make the door. It has worked great for almost 40,000 miles over
almost five years.
