Bill,

A true overdrive as used on US passenger cars and trucks through the 60's is
an additional set of planetary gears usually in the transmission tailshaft
housing. The planetary gears are engaged by a 12V solenoid. It is not a
bolt-on as there are lockout shafts and other parts in the tranny that the
overdrive uses. 

Once 5-speed transmissions with overdrive 5th gears became available (and
these have the 5th speed in the tailhousing too) the old-style overdrives were
phased out. 

There are some current overdrives such as Gear Vendors that are an auxiliary
unit on the driveshaft, but they are prety expensive and usually used with
automatic trannies
