6 volt generators have black tags, 12 volt have red tags.  If tag missing,
must measure output.  Can easily convert from 6 to 12 volts (and visa versa)
by changing field coils.  Yes, must have matching regulator for desired bat
output voltage.

If it's truly a 1956 , it is 12 volt.  If not any generator repair shop can
easily convert it to 12 volt.
