I have attached pictures of the correct 55-59 GMC tach.
I realize and heartily agree with Miq's policy of
not allowing attachments to oletrucks messages. If any other
list member wants copies e-mail me direct.
The pictures include scans of pages in the Master Parts
Books that show GMC part numbers for the tachs and sending units.
The files are rather large, so I have ZIPped them up into one
1.7 MByte file. Use the un-zip program of your choice to create
the originals.
The tach is a Sun model RC-5A. The lettering on the face matches
the 55-59 GMC instruments.
The EB-7A sending unit shown is correct for any 4 cycle 6 cylinder
12V points ignition system to drive this tach. I have never
seen the actual sending unit sold by GMC, so I do not know
if it has as additional/different markings.
Mark is right about the price of the NOS GMC tach kit. One sold
on e#$y late last year for over $800. I sold the parts pictured
to another OleTrucker for a lot less than that early this year.
Another trick to using these (or any old Sun Tach that uses a
transmitter unit) is finding batteries for the transmitter.
Sun Electronics marketed this part as their part number 1766-1.
It was actually a Mallory RM-12-A battery (1.35v Mercury cell).
Some senders used two, the EB-7A used one. The Duracell
equivalent is supposedly DC-12-A. These can be purchased
from Iowa Radio Supply @ 800-332-5296. I talked with Warren,
who said he sells 30-40 of these batteries a month, all for old
Sun tachs. These batteries are not cheap. I payed ~ $12 plus
shipping for 2 of them. Funny thing is that Duracell DC-12-A
is actually a 1.5v Alkaline cell that has the same length and
is slightly larger diameter than a standard AA cell. My guess
is that a regular AA cell with a plastic sleeve around the outside
to help hold it in place in the transmitter would work just fine.

About these "period correct" tachs....
Does anyone have a number on them? Or know how to decode the numers on
them to see if they may have been targeted for any certain vehicle?
My Dad has two Sun tachs and two 6v transmitters/boxes, just wondering
what they may have been originally intended for.
