Double action fuel pumps have the normal diaphragm used to pump gas and
another, very similar, diaphragm that pumps air. The intake side of this
second pump is connected to the wiper motor to provide vacuum while the engine
is running. The output side of the pump is vented to the atmosphere.
Using intake manifold vacuum to provide the vacuum for the wipers works good
when the engine is not under heavy load (and REALLY good when you downshift to
slow down). Opening the throttle wide causes the vacuum to drop to almost
none, just when you may need it most, such as when passing other vehicles
(doesn't happen often with stock OleTrucks).
Vacuum supplied by a dual diaphragm fuel pump will be greatest at high RPM,
pretty much the opposite of manifold vacuum.
The best of all worlds (other than electric) is to use both manifold and pump
vacuum. A check valve is placed in each vacuum line and then both lines are
connected to a vacuum canister which feeds the wipers.
And don't forget the Rain-X.

Subject: [oletrucks] double action fuel pumps?? questions
I am looking for a new fuel pump for my 1946 gmc with a 228cid.
I have been looking through the catalogs, there seems to be a few to choose
from?
I have a few questions, I hope some of you can answer.
1. Is the fuel pump off the 228 GMC engine the same as the chevy 216?
2. There are metal top and glass top. What was origninal? What are the
pros and cons to each? which ones last longer, which one is more reliable?
3. Some listed are doubel action?? what does that mean?
4. Some I found talk about wiper vacuum, how does the fuel pump affect the
vacuum wipers? I have never heard of this, I would like to learn more about
it.
5. who has the best deals on fuel pumps? The local shop in town has one
that fits the 216 engine for $27. If it's the same as the 228, I'll
probably go with that, the catalogs I've seen so far are all in the $50
range.
thanks all!!
