I don't know of any books or articles...but I'm building a 64 4x4
Suburban right now, so I'm fighting a similar battle. The 64 has quite
a different from than the TF trucks, though. I'm using an original 66
GMC Suburban 4x4 frame, which came with leaf springs, some of the
correct crossmembers, and it's quite a bit stronger than the 2wd frame.
But the neat thing about the TF trucks is that they are relatively easy
to convert, just bolt on a front axle, add 4" or so lift blocks to the
rear, and find the transfer case and stuff. You might want to add power
steering, using the later 70-87 truck 4x4 box and pitman arm; perhaps
one of the kits to convert 2wd trucks to power steering puts the box in
the right place ahead of the axle?
Another alternative is to try to find the original NAPCO stuff that was
used before (and possibly after?) Chevy started making 4x4s in 57. This
is a factory type conversion, and should be easier than adapting later
model axles and stuff. But NAPCO stuff is scarce, and relatively
fragile.
