Smokey,
I had a similar problem with a late model pickup in that the shimmy
was at about 45 mph, not 40 and not 50. The problem turned out to be
either ball joints (somewhat equivalent to your king pins) or tie-rods.
Can't really tell which it was as I replaced both at the same time and the
problem went away completely. I agreel with Bill, it is relatively cheap
and easy to have the tire balance checked, but it is also very easy to jack
up the front and see if there is any play in the king pins. Unless they
have been replaced in the last 52 years, I would tend to think that you
have worn king pins.

I'm betting the tires are out of balance. I had a similar problem on a late
model truck one time that did the same thing.
You can check kingpins by jacking up the truck, grabbing the front tire,
one hand at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock and try rocking the tire back
and forth towards you and away from you. If there is a lot of play then the
pins are worn. I had a 54 Jimmy one time that had this problem and when it
rolled it felt like you were riding in a clown car..more like an up and
down than a shake. At any rate it would be cheaper to have balance checked
first.
