I need to replace the clutch on my new (thanks again Skip...head goes Monday
for testing) 1958 truck engine. I am thinking about buying from an online
parts store, but the information I have to select from, leaves me a bit
confused.
First off, they do not list clutches for trucks, but do for 1958 Belairs and
Biscaynes. So, my first question...are they any differences between a car's
clutch and a truck's clutch in 1958?
Here are the types of choices I have: (I am listing the information the way
it is listed, which is part of the problem...I don't know what it means -
there are 7 choices of clutches...some obviously are different diameter discs,
some different cover sizes, some are different friction plate material. I'll
list a couple and then ask my question:
1. 235 engine (w/10" cover)(10-3/8:1-1/8:10T)(FLAT Flywheel) (ok, first off,
what is a "cover"...is this the pressure plate? If so, what is the
information in the second set of parentheses referring to? Is this the
diameter and width/depth of the flywheel? If so, what does the 10T refer to?
2. 235 engine (w/10-1/2" cover and 9-1/2" disc)(9-1/2:1-1/8:10T)(FLAT
Flywheel). Ok, still don't know what the "cover" means. Has anyone ever
heard of the pressure plate being called the "cover"? Clearly, this has a
smaller diameter disc (I assume disc means same as friction plate?), but then
again am lost with the info in the second parentheses.
The other 5 choices are variations of these two...some have a different type
of diaphragm, some have different disc material, but regardless of that, if
anyone can tell me how to just interpret these two items above, I think I will
be home free.
I have called the company and they have no clue...they said the vendor they
buy from will only give them this much information and have said that anyone
who SHOULD be buying these clutches will understand the information...if not,
then they have no business doing the work anyway. Well...I kinda resent that,
but will overlook it if I can find someone to help this clueless Southern boy
figgger this out...
