Gene,
For my 45 Chevy it came to me with no surface paint just a thin coat of
rust. I took my Porter-Cable sander and took off the rust as best I could.
Then we picked the desired color to test if I wanted my truck to be this
color. Picked Rustoloum Hunter Green for the body and gloss black for the
fenders and bumper. I used chrome paint for the grill. It looks ok from 20
feet or so. Now I am working on one part at a time I am guessing it will
take 3 - 5 years to get it all done correctly. I started with the
mechanical stuff and have completed all of that after 2 years. Now that my
truck has been green for 2 years I am leaning towards red. Next onto the
body work. So far I get discolorations like an oil spill coming through the
paint so I just top coat it. I was told it was best to cover it with
something since it is stored outside. Good Luck,

NHJim

What is the best way to preserve my rusty ol'truck before I can start
working on it?

I'd like to be able to blast/hammer/sand/prime a fender at a time, but I'm
afraid that I would actually accelerate the decay if I don't actually apply
paint. Would it be sufficient to use an aerosol can of primer to cover any
exposed metal (realizing that I would completely re-sand and re-prime when
I went to paint it for real.)

Primer really isn't intended for exposure to elements...that's why we have
paint, right?

I know aerosol cans are expensive, but so is the amount of paint I'd waste
cleaning the gun after only painting one fender.

Any other suggestions? What has everyone else done?
