This is my simpler explanation.
1. You need a Chevy S10 5 speed transmission. The best gear ratio is
the one from a 4.3L V6 1988-92 Chevy S10. I paid $250. 00 at a local
junkyard. The 4 cyl. version is too low ratio.
2. You need to modify the transmission's throwout bearing shaft by
shortening it. You also have to grind off some of the clutch disc
center housing. It's easy to do and I can tell you exactly how to do
it.
3. You can use your GMC clutch pressure plate but you need to get a 14
spline clutch disc to use with the 14 spline T5 tranny input shaft. I
found a 1988 Chevy Camero clutch disc worked and I put a new 1949 Chevy
GM pressure plate, and throwout bearing with it. You use your stock
flywheel and bellhousing.
4. The transmission will bolt directly to your bellhousing after you
ream out the 4 bolt hole with a 1/2 in. drill. They are a slightly
smaller metric size.
5. The shifter is about 6 in further back then stock and it needs to be
bent a little towards the dash. I just got a new floor cover for a
truck with a reg. transmission without a hole from Chevy Duty for about
$50. I then cut the hole for the T5 shifter. I can send some photos.
6. You need to measure the distance from the new tranny to the U joint
on your rearend. I think it is about 61 inches. I found a old Buick
driveshaft ($10.) that fit with new U joints ($50.) but you can have one
made up if necessary.
This sounds more difficult than it really is .... I am just an old guy
(60) who hasn't worked on cars for 40 yrs but I figured it out. I am
happy to help you out if you want.
