you definitly want single phase.  3 phase is industrial power is is
generally much more expensive per kilowatt.  Here in MO single is about
6cents and 3 phase is 10.5 per kw.  You also have to rewire for 3 phase
power from the service (breaker) panel.

Hi all, thanks fo rthe input, I guess 2 stage is the way to go.
 Ingersoll Rand seems to have a few nice compressors I can aford. What
type of motor do I want? single or 3 phase?
Marvin: Where do you find the refurbished compressors? I've been looking
at Northern tool and equipment. They have free shipping on most
compressors.!
