First year for Chevelle was 64.
Chevelle used 230" 6 cylinder that eventually (somewhere around 67 or
68) was upsized to 250". Basically was the same engine used in full
sized Chevy cars.

Subject: [oletrucks] 235, 261 & rearend questions
I was doing some junk yard doggin' yesterday and have a few questions
that I
thought I would pose to the group.
I found several (61) Chevelle 300 Deluxe and was wondering what engine
they
had in them. They have an inline 6 with what appeared to be seven valve
cover bolts around the perimeter of the cover. Also looking from the
front
of the engine were two plates on the on the left hand side of the engine
behind the oil filter. Each cover plate had three bolts in line.
Hopefully
this is enough to tell something. I thought if these were 235s or 261s
that
I might pick one up.
Also, I'm thinking that it may have the rear end that I need if I do a
conversion. Does anyone know what the '61 Chevelle was geared? It has
a
powerglide auto tranny. I found an '84 Blazer 4x4 that looked like the
rear
would work. Is there any way of finding out what that is geared without
pulling the cover? I do have the serial number and it does look
original.
Thanks.
