Sounds like your battery is not able to put out enough amps to run
the starter. Will it run the headlights without the charger on?
Does the battery voltage drop when the headlights or starter are
engaged?
Another possibility is some bad wiring around the starter or a bad
starter.
Don't forget the ground connections. They are just as important
as the connections to the starter.
The battery can show normal voltage with no load but not be able
to put enough current out to run something.
Disconnect the leads from the battery and put the charger on it.
The charger amps should go down to a trickle within an hour or so.
If they don't, the battery is toast. If they do, start looking
for a short in the wiring somewhere or a lack of charging capacity.
These things are way simpler than anything British, not to mention
way more reliable, but the principles are the same. Let us know
what you come up with.
