The trick is to attach a 6' long wire to the horn button end of the horn
button wire. I solder this connection, because if it comes undone
accidentally you are screwed. Tie a large wrench to the other end of the 6'
long wire (to prevent you from pulling it all the way through the steering
column). Now pull the old horn wire out of the bottom of the steering
column dragging the 6' wire along behind. Detach (un-solder) the 6' wire
and re-attach it (solder it) to the new horn button wire. Pull the
wrench-end of the 6' wire back up through the column until your new horn
button wire pops out at the top. Unsolder the 6' wire and you are ready to
go.

Thought I was doing great with the truck rewire (Chevy
Duty harness makes it a cakewalk) until I came upon
the horn wire in the steering column. The insulation
on the existing wire is gone at the point the wire
enters the steering column. I assume if I leave it
like that it will ground itself to the truck and I
will have a horn blowing uncontrollably whenever I
come up behind a large group of Hell's Angels.

Do I need special tools to get inside the steering
column to replace the wire? Looks like that would be
the case from the shop manual -- but I know someone
has a trick for this.

Thanks in advance -- Barry
