Jay, if it is an old Holmes unit it may be power up only. You had to slip
the winch clutch to lower your load....very dangerous. I believe the power
up and down units were introduced in the early 50's. If you go to see it,
get the model number off of the small brass tag on the mast (i.e.. 485, 490,
500, 515, 525 etc.). If it is a newer unit it will have it's number stamped
in the horizontal mast name plate (i.e.. "Holmes 440").
